Various CCH ProSystem fx Tax applications lock files while they are in-use, such as a tax return file that is open in Tax Preparation.  To close files on the network, simply closing the return should release the lock.  The steps below explain how to close open files on your server. During this process, you can also see who has the files open.

On a Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 server, follow these steps:

  1. On the server console, select Start > All Programs > Administrator Tools.
  2. Click Share and Storage Management.
  3. In the “Share and Storage Management” window, select Manage Open Files under the “Actions” column to open the “Manage Open Files” window.
    • The “Accessed By” column shows who has files open.  Rebooting a workstation should close the files.
      • If the files do not close or if the user cannot reboot, right-click the open files and select Close Selected.  Be careful when you select this option. If a user is working in Tax Preparation, “Close Selected” closes the return and unsaved information is lost.
      • To select all files that are currently open in the “Wfx32” folder, use Windows key combinations. Press CTRL+ click (single line by line selection), or select the first file and hold SHIFT+ click and select the last file needed (group of files selection).

On a Microsoft Windows 2012 R2 servers, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Server Management Console.
  2. Click Tools and then Computer Management.
  3. Click > next to “Shared Folders.”
  4. Click Open Files. All of the open files on your server are shown on the right side of the window.
  5. Look for the files in the “Wfx32” folder.
  6. Close these files using one the following methods:
    • The “Accessed By” column shows who has files open.  Rebooting a workstation should close the files.
    • If the files do not close or if the user cannot reboot, right-click the open files and select Close Open File.  Be careful when you select this option. If a user is working in Tax Preparation, “Close Open File” closes the return and unsaved information is lost.

On a Linux server, follow these steps:

Note: Depending on your Linux distribution, these instructions may differ.

To view open files, do the following:

  1. Open the Terminal (command line).
  2. Enter smbstatus and press Enter. Open files are shown at the bottom under “Locked filed.”

To close the open files, do the following:

  1. First ask users to close the files. If files remain open, proceed to the next step.
  2. Open the command line as an admin user and enter Systemctl smb restart.
